What custom software costs at FourCents

Many custom software agencies do not publish prices. We do, because a range up front saves both sides a sales call. These are the bands our quotes fall into.

    Custom software we have built

Real projects from our portfolio: the problem, what we built and what changed.

Custom POS for a Canadian Furniture Retailer: illustration, not the client's actual screenIllustration, not the client's actual screen
    Retail POS

Custom POS for a Canadian Furniture Retailer

    Problem:
A furniture sale runs past the counter: special orders, deposits, deliveries, financing and commission all hang off it.
    What we built:
We built one POS for sales and multi-location stock, special orders, deposits and layaway, delivery booking with routes and drivers, financing and split payments on integrated card terminals, and sales, commission and accounting reports.
    Result:
All staff use it every day, checkout and back-office work are faster, and it replaced the store's previous system, Lightspeed.

    Immigration Document Management

    Problem:
A firm was tracking applications and deadlines across spreadsheets and shared drives.
    What we built:
We built secure file management, application tracking, automated deadline reminders, and a client portal with multi-language support.
    Result:
Staff see every case and deadline in one place, and clients upload documents without email back and forth.

    Enterprise Software

    Maritime Operations Platform

    Problem:
Operations data lived in separate tools with no single view of the fleet.
    What we built:
We built real-time vessel tracking, crew management, maintenance scheduling, and compliance monitoring in one platform.
    Result:
Coordinators plan the whole fleet from a single screen instead of chasing updates.

How a custom software project runs

    1. 1

      Fixed quote within 24 hours

Send the form with a few lines about the project. Within 24 hours of receiving it (one business day) you get either a fixed written quote or a short list of questions we need answered first. A quote states the scope, the price in CAD, the timeline and what is not included.

    2. 2

      Scope and design

We map the workflow the software replaces, agree the first release, and design the main screens. You approve the design before code is written.

    3. 3

      Build in weekly cycles

Each week ends with a working version you can use. Feedback goes into the next cycle, so nothing surprises you at the end.

    4. 4

      Launch and hand-over

We move your data, train your team, launch, and hand over the code and documentation.

    5. 5

      Support and next phases

Optional support plan after launch. Later phases are quoted separately, so you only commit to what you need next.

What a custom software project includes

    • A written scope that lists every screen, role and integration before the build starts
    • Design of the key screens, approved by you before development
    • Development in weekly cycles with a working demo you can click through
    • Integrations with the systems you already run, for example accounting, CRM, payments or email
    • Testing on real data, then launch and hand-over
    • Full source code, hosting set-up and documentation, owned by you

Questions people ask before hiring us

How much does custom software cost in Canada?

At FourCents, custom business software typically costs $10,000 to $40,000 CAD. A first version (MVP) of a web app is $8,000 to $15,000, a standard web application $15,000 to $30,000, and complex systems above $40,000 are quoted individually. The fixed quote after scoping is the price for the agreed scope.

How fast do I get a quote?

Within 24 hours of receiving your project details (one business day), you get either a fixed written quote or a short list of questions we need answered to give one.

    Do I own the code?

Yes. You receive the full source code, the hosting set-up and the documentation. There is no licence fee and no lock-in, so another developer or your own team can take it over.

Should I build custom software or buy an off-the-shelf tool?

Buy when a product already does what you need at a fair subscription price. Build when you are paying for several tools that still need manual work between them, or when the way you work is what sets you apart. Our free build vs buy calculator shows the payback for your numbers.

    What happens after launch?

You can run the software yourself or take a support plan, which is about 15% to 20% of the build cost per year and covers hosting, updates, security patches, backups and small changes.

    Where are you based?

Our studio is at 49 Thorncliffe Park Drive in East York, Toronto. We work with clients across Canada, mostly by video call, and meet in person in the GTA when it helps.
