What you pay for: hosting, maintenance and support
A website is never finished on launch day. It needs hosting, updates, backups and someone to call. That ongoing work is what you pay for, on a plan sized to your organisation.
- Managed hosting, SSL and automated off-site backups
- Software updates, tested before they go live
- Security monitoring and clean-up if something goes wrong
- Uptime monitoring
- Content and layout changes within the plan you choose
The plan is quoted before the build begins, and the terms, including how either side can end it, are set out in the written agreement.
What the free build does not cover
We would rather be clear now than surprise you later.
- Your domain name and any third-party licences, stock photography or fonts you choose
- Processing fees charged by your donation or payment provider
- Large custom software such as member portals, case management systems or mobile apps, which we quote separately
- Copywriting, photography and translation beyond light editing of the content you supply
Why we do it this way
What hurts a nonprofit is rarely a cheap website. It is a website nobody maintains: an expired certificate on the donation page, software nobody updated, a volunteer who built it and then moved away. We would rather earn our keep by looking after the site for years than by charging a large build fee once.
We take on a limited number of nonprofit builds at a time so each one gets proper attention. If the queue is full, we tell you the realistic start date.
Questions
Is the website really free?
Yes. We do not charge for the design and build of a standard nonprofit website. You pay for hosting and an ongoing maintenance and support plan, quoted in writing before any work begins.
How much is the hosting and support plan?
It depends on the size of the site and how much support you want, so we quote it for your organisation instead of publishing one number. The quote is free and you see the figure before we start.
Who is eligible?
Registered charities and incorporated nonprofit organisations. If you are a community group without formal registration, tell us about your work and we will let you know.
Who owns the website?
You do. Your content, domain and donor data stay yours. If you move on, we hand over the site files and a current backup.
What if we need something bigger, like a member portal or an app?
The free build covers a standard informational and fundraising website. Custom software is quoted separately at a fixed scope, and you can decide on it later.
