The challenge
Logistics teams run on phone calls, paper, and separate tools, with no single view of where jobs, drivers, and vehicles actually are.
We build dispatch, tracking, fleet, and delivery software that gives you one clear view of every job, vehicle, and driver, so nothing gets lost between pickup and drop-off.
Who this logistics & transportation software development page is for
This page is for carriers, courier and last-mile companies, freight brokers, moving companies and warehouse operators in Canada. If dispatch happens over the phone, proof of delivery is a photo in a text thread, and customers call to ask where their shipment is, we build the software that replaces those calls.
Systems logistics & transportation businesses already run, and what we connect to
Custom software rarely starts from nothing. These are the systems we usually find in place, and the integration approach we take with each.
- Transportation management systems (TMS) and load boards, connected where the vendor allows
- Telematics and ELD providers for vehicle location and hours of service
- Accounting platforms for invoicing, driver pay and fuel costs
- Customer ERPs and order systems that send shipment requests by EDI, API or email
- Warehouse management systems for inbound and outbound scanning
- Mapping and routing services for ETAs and route sequencing
Build, buy or connect: what usually makes sense in logistics & transportation
We recommend off-the-shelf software whenever it fits. Custom development earns its cost only where the row says so.
| Need | Off-the-shelf | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| ELD and hours-of-service logging | Buy. Use a certified device and provider. | Never build this; pull its data into your dispatch view instead. |
| Dispatch board and job tracking | Generic TMS products work for standard freight. | Build when your jobs have unusual stops, equipment, pricing rules or customer requirements. |
| Driver app with proof of delivery | Included in many TMS tools, often clumsy offline. | Build when drivers need a simple app that works with no signal and matches your paperwork. |
| Customer tracking portal | Basic tracking links exist in most tools. | Build when customers want their own login, documents, invoices and reporting. |
What a first release usually includes
We scope a first release that a real team can use within weeks, then add phases. For logistics & transportation projects that first release typically contains:
- Order intake from web form, email parsing or customer API
- Dispatch board with drag-and-drop assignment and status per stop
- Driver app: stop list, navigation handoff, photos, signatures, offline queue
- Customer tracking link with ETA and proof of delivery
- Invoicing export to your accounting platform
What drives the cost
We do not publish prices because these drivers change the number more than anything else. Your quote is fixed-scope and written after discovery.
- Offline reliability in the driver app, which takes real engineering to get right
- Number of integrations (telematics, TMS, customer EDI, accounting)
- Route optimization: a simple sequence is cheap, true multi-vehicle optimization is not
- Pricing and rating rules: zones, weight breaks, accessorials, fuel surcharges
- Customer-facing portal with logins and document storage
- Cross-border documents and customs data if you run into the US
Timelines for logistics & transportation software, and what moves them
Ranges below are typical for the scope described on this page. They are not a promise for your project; the right-hand column is what makes a project land at the short or long end.
| Phase | Typical range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and workflow mapping | 1 to 3 weeks | How many job types and customer formats you handle |
| First release (intake, dispatch, driver app) | 10 to 16 weeks | Offline requirements and integration count |
| Customer portal, rating, reporting | 4 to 8 weeks each | Complexity of pricing rules and customer demands |
Privacy and compliance in Canada
- Hours-of-service and ELD rules are set federally and provincially for commercial carriers. Your certified ELD provider handles the logging; custom software should read from it, not replace it.
- Driver location data is personal information under PIPEDA or provincial laws. Tell drivers what is tracked, when, and why, and limit tracking to working hours.
- Quebec Law 25 applies to carriers with Quebec employees or customers, including privacy impact assessments for new tracking systems.
- Keep proof-of-delivery records for the retention period your contracts and accountant require. Confirm with counsel.
This is general information, not legal advice. Laws and regulator guidance change; confirm your obligations with counsel and your regulator before launch.
Common mistakes we help you avoid
- A driver app that fails when the signal drops in a loading dock or rural route
- Dispatching from a spreadsheet while the "system" is only used for invoicing
- Building route optimization before basic dispatch and tracking work
- Not planning for exceptions: refused deliveries, damages, partial loads
Illustrative example
Illustrative example, not a client story: a regional courier with 25 vans dispatches by phone and collects signatures on paper. A first release gives dispatchers a live board, drivers an app that queues photos and signatures offline, and customers a tracking link. Proof of delivery is available the moment it is captured, and end-of-day paperwork disappears.

Common logistics & transportation software questions
Can you connect to our telematics or ELD provider?
Usually yes. Most providers offer APIs for vehicle location and status. We pull that data into the dispatch view so you have one screen, while the certified device keeps doing the compliance logging.
Does the driver app work offline?
Yes, if we design for it from the start. Stops, photos and signatures are stored on the phone and sent when the signal returns. It is one of the main cost drivers, so we scope it carefully.
Should we buy a TMS or build?
If your freight is standard, a TMS is the faster route and we will say so. Build when your jobs, pricing or customer requirements do not fit, or when you need a driver app and customer portal that the TMS does poorly.
Do I own the software?
Yes. Everything we build is yours, documented and handed over with no lock-in. You receive the source code, the infrastructure setup and the documentation.
How do you quote?
After a short discovery we send a written, fixed-scope quote for the first release. Later phases are quoted separately so you only commit to what you need next. We do not publish prices because the drivers above change the number a lot.
