The challenge
Cannabis businesses face strict age, tracking, and compliance rules at every step, on top of running a normal retail operation.
We build compliant e-commerce, delivery, and management software for the cannabis industry, so you sell and operate while staying inside strict rules.
Who this cannabis software development page is for
This page is for licensed cannabis retailers and retail chains, licensed producers and processors, and ancillary businesses (accessories, software, services) in Canada. Cannabis software in Canada must fit a two-level system: federal licensing and tracking under the Cannabis Act, and provincial rules for retail, delivery and advertising that differ from province to province. We build around those rules with your compliance lead, never around them.
Systems cannabis businesses already run, and what we connect to
Custom software rarely starts from nothing. These are the systems we usually find in place, and the integration approach we take with each.
- Cannabis POS and inventory platforms that produce the provincial and federal reports
- Provincial wholesale ordering portals, which are usually manual
- Health Canada's Cannabis Tracking and Licensing System (CTLS), where licence holders and provincially authorized retailers submit monthly reports; custom software prepares data, it does not replace the filing
- Seed-to-sale and ERP systems for producers
- Age verification and identity services
- Payment processors that accept cannabis merchants
Build, buy or connect: what usually makes sense in cannabis
We recommend off-the-shelf software whenever it fits. Custom development earns its cost only where the row says so.
| Need | Off-the-shelf | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Retail POS and compliance reporting | Buy a cannabis-specific POS. Reporting rules are its job. | Integrate for menus, loyalty and multi-store reporting. |
| Online menu, pre-order and delivery where permitted | Menu platforms exist and are quick to launch. | Build when you have several stores, your own delivery operation, or a brand experience the platform cannot give. |
| Producer inventory management software and batch records | Seed-to-sale systems cover licensed activities. | Build quality, lab result and customer-facing layers around them. |
| Multi-store reporting and loyalty | Vendor dashboards cover one platform. | Build one view across stores and systems, with loyalty rules that respect provincial promotion limits. |
What a first release usually includes
We scope a first release that a real team can use within weeks, then add phases. For cannabis projects that first release typically contains:
- Age gate and verification appropriate to the province and channel
- Online menu synced from the POS with live stock and compliant product information
- Pre-order for pickup, and delivery scheduling where the province allows
- Multi-store dashboard: sales, inventory, low stock, aging product
- Exports that support the reports your POS and regulator require
What drives the cost
We do not publish prices because these drivers change the number more than anything else. Your quote is fixed-scope and written after discovery.
- Provincial rule differences if you operate in more than one province
- POS integration depth and how current its API is
- Delivery operations: driver app, ID check at door, manifest records
- Loyalty and promotion rules constrained by regulations
- Producer batch, lab and recall traceability
- Payment processing options, which are narrower for cannabis merchants
Timelines for cannabis software, and what moves them
Ranges below are typical for the scope described on this page. They are not a promise for your project; the right-hand column is what makes a project land at the short or long end.
| Phase | Typical range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and compliance review | 2 to 4 weeks | Your compliance lead's availability and province count |
| First release (menu, pre-order, dashboard) | 8 to 12 weeks | POS integration and store count |
| Delivery, loyalty, producer tools | 4 to 10 weeks each | Regulatory constraints and driver operations |
Privacy and compliance in Canada
- The federal Cannabis Act and its regulations set licensing, packaging, promotion and tracking rules. Licence holders and provincially authorized distributors and retailers submit monthly reports through Health Canada's Cannabis Tracking and Licensing System.
- Each province sets its own minimum age, retail model, delivery rules and advertising limits. Software must be configured per province. Confirm every rule with your compliance lead and counsel before launch.
- Promotion rules restrict how products can be marketed; loyalty and email programs need legal review.
- Customer data is personal information under PIPEDA or provincial laws; age verification records should be minimal and retained only as required. Quebec Law 25 applies in Quebec.
This is general information, not legal advice. Laws and regulator guidance change; confirm your obligations with counsel and your regulator before launch.
Common mistakes we help you avoid
- Copying a menu or promotion design from another province without checking the rules
- Storing scanned IDs when a yes/no verification record would do
- Loyalty programs that breach promotion limits
- Building a POS instead of integrating with a compliant one
Illustrative example
Illustrative example, not a client story: a four-store retailer runs a compliant POS but has a menu platform that shows stale stock and cannot report across stores. A custom menu and pre-order site syncs stock from the POS every few minutes, enforces the age gate, and offers pickup by store. A multi-store dashboard shows sales, aging inventory and low stock. Delivery is added later where the province permits, with manifests and ID checks in a driver app.

Common cannabis software questions
Do you build cannabis software for Canada?
Yes. We build menus, pre-order, delivery, multi-store reporting and producer-side tools for licensed businesses in Canada, working with your compliance lead so every feature fits federal and provincial rules.
Can you integrate with our cannabis POS?
Most cannabis POS vendors have APIs for products, stock and orders. We confirm access during discovery. The POS keeps producing the regulatory reports.
Can we sell online and deliver?
It depends on your province. Some allow retailer delivery and click-and-collect, some restrict online sales to the provincial retailer. We build only what your licence and province allow; confirm with counsel.
Do I own the software?
Yes. Everything we build is yours, documented and handed over with no lock-in. You receive the source code, the infrastructure setup and the documentation.
How do you quote?
After a short discovery we send a written, fixed-scope quote for the first release. Later phases are quoted separately so you only commit to what you need next. We do not publish prices because the drivers above change the number a lot.
