The challenge
Energy and utility teams manage complex operations and strict compliance across tools that were never built to work together.
We build monitoring, data, and portal software for energy and utility businesses, so field data, customers, and compliance all live in one reliable system.
Who this energy & utilities software development page is for
This page is for solar and renewable installers, energy retailers and brokers, propane and fuel distributors, water and wastewater operators, electrical contractors, and municipal or cooperative utilities in Canada. Typical needs: a customer portal over usage and billing data, a field and asset app for inspections, or a monitoring dashboard that joins several device platforms.
Systems energy & utilities businesses already run, and what we connect to
Custom software rarely starts from nothing. These are the systems we usually find in place, and the integration approach we take with each.
- Billing and customer information systems, connected by API or file exchange
- SCADA, meter and device platforms, read through the vendor interface, never modified
- Asset and work management tools for inspections and maintenance
- Accounting and ERP systems
- GIS and mapping services for assets and service areas
- Regulatory reporting templates
Build, buy or connect: what usually makes sense in energy & utilities
We recommend off-the-shelf software whenever it fits. Custom development earns its cost only where the row says so.
| Need | Off-the-shelf | Custom build |
|---|---|---|
| Billing and rate calculation for a regulated utility | Buy. Regulated billing is specialized and audited. | Build the customer portal and reporting around it. |
| Customer portal (usage, bills, requests) | Vendor portals exist but are often dated. | Build when you need your brand, clear usage charts and service requests routed to field staff. |
| Field inspection and asset app | Enterprise asset tools fit large utilities. | Build a lighter app for small utilities and contractors with offline forms and photos. |
| Monitoring dashboard across device vendors | Each vendor shows its own devices. | Build one view over several platforms with alerts your team defines. |
What a first release usually includes
We scope a first release that a real team can use within weeks, then add phases. For energy & utilities projects that first release typically contains:
- Customer portal with usage history, bills and service requests
- Field app for inspections and work orders with offline forms and photos
- Asset register with location, status and maintenance history
- Monitoring dashboard with alerts from device data
- Exports for regulatory and management reporting
What drives the cost
We do not publish prices because these drivers change the number more than anything else. Your quote is fixed-scope and written after discovery.
- Access to device and billing data, and its quality
- Uptime and reliability requirements, including monitoring and on-call support
- Number of asset types and inspection forms
- Regulatory reporting formats
- Security review expectations, which are higher for critical infrastructure
- Bilingual and accessibility requirements for public-facing portals
Timelines for energy & utilities software, and what moves them
Ranges below are typical for the scope described on this page. They are not a promise for your project; the right-hand column is what makes a project land at the short or long end.
| Phase | Typical range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and data access | 2 to 4 weeks | Vendor cooperation on device and billing data |
| First release (portal or field app) | 10 to 16 weeks | Data quality and reliability requirements |
| Monitoring, reporting, integrations | 4 to 8 weeks each | Device platform count |
Privacy and compliance in Canada
- Energy and utilities are regulated provincially (for example the Ontario Energy Board) and in some cases federally. Rules on billing, customer communication and reporting come from your regulator. Software supports them; it does not define them. Confirm with counsel and your regulator.
- Customer usage data is personal information under PIPEDA or provincial laws, and public utilities may fall under public-sector privacy laws instead. Quebec Law 25 applies to Quebec operators.
- Critical infrastructure operators may have cybersecurity expectations from regulators or insurers. We build to good practice and document it; we hold no SOC 2 or ISO certification.
- Public-facing portals of larger organizations must meet WCAG 2.0 AA under AODA in Ontario.
This is general information, not legal advice. Laws and regulator guidance change; confirm your obligations with counsel and your regulator before launch.
Common mistakes we help you avoid
- Writing to SCADA or metering systems from a web app instead of reading only
- Portals built without checking how billing data is exported
- Field apps that need signal at remote sites
- No plan for who watches the monitoring alerts at night
Illustrative example
Illustrative example, not a client story: a small water utility answers usage and billing questions by phone and inspects assets on paper. A customer portal shows usage and bills from the billing system export and takes service requests. A field app captures inspections offline with photos against the asset register. Managers see overdue inspections and open requests on one dashboard.

Common energy & utilities software questions
Can you read data from our meters and SCADA system?
Read-only, through the vendor interface or exports, yes. We do not modify control systems. The data feeds dashboards, alerts and customer portals.
Do you build customer portals for utilities?
Yes. Usage history, bills, payments through your processor, service requests and outage notices are typical scope, with accessibility and bilingual support where required.
Can you support the reliability we need?
We build with monitoring, backups and documented runbooks, and we offer support plans. For critical infrastructure we scope reliability requirements with you at the start so hosting and on-call fit them.
Do I own the software?
Yes. Everything we build is yours, documented and handed over with no lock-in. You receive the source code, the infrastructure setup and the documentation.
How do you quote?
After a short discovery we send a written, fixed-scope quote for the first release. Later phases are quoted separately so you only commit to what you need next. We do not publish prices because the drivers above change the number a lot.
